It can be easy to want to retaliate when you see something you disagree with online. But when we react out of anger, we often end up in a keyboard battle with a total stranger, and everything can very quickly become a lot worse. Trying to catch ourselves in the midst of an angry outburst can be really tough as emotions often run so high, but nevertheless it is always better to try to not fight fire with fire in these kinds of situations.
So, in order to distract yourself from the potential of a keyboard battle, here are some better uses of your time and keep your mind off of getting into an online argument.
- Read a book
- Watch a YouTube video
- Meditate
- Call your friends
- Take an online quiz
- Go for a walk
- Play a game
- Do some exercise
- Leave a nice comment on something else
- Scroll your phone
- Write the comment down, but just in your Notes section on your phone, and then delete it
- Do a little online shopping
- Walk the dog – if you have one
- Take a shower
- Write in a gratitude journal
- Bake a cake
- Draw or paint something
- Tidy your room
- Clear out your wardrobe
- Watch a movie or your favourite TV show
- Plan what your going to have for dinner
- Do literally anything that isn’t getting angry online
