An Open Letter on Unity

We live in a strange time, where we have never seemed so far apart from one another. It seems like there is nothing that will bring us together at the moment, not vaccines, not lockdowns, and certainly not politics.

Today, the world will tune in to watch the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the 46th President and Vice President of the United States. For many, this news comes as welcome relief from four years of controversial headlines, where a leader might begin to heal the divide that exists not only in the States but also across the world. When a minority female Vice President is sworn in, giving hope to millions of people of colour, especially women, for a better future.

The drama leading up to today has been unavoidable, with riots across the U.S claiming electoral fraud. When the planet goes topsy-turvy, and we see the confederate flag raised on the ransacked Capitol Hill, it’s hard to feel like there is anything positive in the world. When we are stuck at home and separated from the ones we love, it’s hard to feel anything other than lonely.

But, we are not alone, and we are not all this negativity. Unity is something that might feel like it’s a long way away, but the truth remains that we all have more in common than we don’t. We have all been together in our aloneness throughout the pandemic, staying home and wearing masks to fight for the lives of total strangers.

In the coming weeks and months after today, we will all begin to unite once more. It might not feel like we will, but good people will always come together to make the world a better, kinder place to live.

If you feel isolated, lonely or concerned, you can come to us about anything. Our Support Mentors are available here for free anonymous support and advice.
